In their practical manuals on preaching both Hercules Collins and Petrus Van Mastricht recommend using Matthew Poole’s commentary for preparing sermons. Totally agree!

van Mastricht says that application is “the soul of preaching” and that preachers need to be careful not to be too excessively lengthy elsewhere and “steal away” time from application-
