It’s pretty simple: Affirmative consent means an active ‘yes’, rather than assuming the absence of a ‘no’. It's the right thing to do – and Labour will get it done.

Fascinating Wellington Central poll on Newshub Nation. Unsurprisingly Ibrahim is ahead, but it's a worry that the progressive vote is splitting in just a way that the National candidate could just sneak through the middle. Essential that lefties in the electorate vote Ibrahim!

Hmmm the National Party spokesperson on climate change giving a speech to #CCBC2023 didn’t realise that the emissions for 2021 have already been published. He said they wouldn’t be published until next year 🤭ooopsy.

Excellent speech and discussion with David Parker - everything from the importance of water allocation for Māori, modal shift, dire consequences of permanent pine, to improved resource legislation and the ‘sexy coal Brownlee’ saga #ccbc2023 #deliveringnetzero

Ahead of tomorrow's Q+A Finance Debate, I thought that I should dig around for how the NZ economy is doing. A few charts here on the current state of play against the countries that we usually compare ourselves to. All data here is from the OECD, Stats NZ, and IMF.

Fiscal Plans - the good, the bad, and the ugly. With both National and Labour now having released fiscal plans we can see how the decisions of the 2 main political parties add up. It’s a story of the good, the bad & the ugly – and it’s not all one-sided. A long 🧵(apologies)

Of the two parties' fiscal plans, National’s indexing of benefits to inflation rather than wages is downright ugly. Reducing debt by taking money from some of the poorest and most vulnerable households in New Zealand is not only questionable ethically, it’s bad economics.

Labour MP reports assault to police, Te Pāti Māori candidate reports home invasion and threatening letter. This is so far beyond “passionate” debate and a “robust” election campaign. Time for people and political leaders of all stripes to get real and call this crap out.

What Hamas inflicted on the people of Israel was unconscionable. So is this. The collective punishment of the Gazan people must cease.

HAPPENING NOW: Hundreds of American Jews are holding a sit-in at Congress — and we won’t leave until Congress calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. As thousands of U.S. Jews protest outside, over 350 are inside, including two dozen rabbis, holding prayerful resistance.
