Our new research finds that spot-on flea treatments on pets are a major source of river contamination with potent insecticides. Also, owners hands are continually contaminated by contact with treated pets. Pls RT (1/2)

These rivers have all tested +ve for thiamethoxam since 2020 (data from Env Agency). This neonicotinoid was banned in Europe in 2018, but is allowed on sugar beet crops in UK. That is its only authorised use. Yet it is turning up in rivers all over the place... Hugely concerning.

- 20 times as many bees
- increases in beneficial insects such as hoverflies & beetles who eat pests, reducing need for pesticides
- increased pollinators visited soy crops in neighbouring fields.

Yesterday our government announced it was granting an “emergency authorization” for sugar beet growers to use a banned neonicotinoid pesticide on their crops. Here are my thoughts:
