Guess what I am doing today? I am scanning a bunch of pages from Den 3: Children of Fire for possible future Artist Editions! My hope is that the complete Den will be offered in this format and my friends at Delirium have already published the vol. 1 and soon vol. 2!

In 1990 Marvel published a deluxe hardcover with what I consider to be art wise the ultimate masterpiece by the Frank Miller/Lynn Valley team. “Elektra Lives Again” was a masterfully executed comic with painted colors. The line art and coloring mixed beautifully.

“Black Orchid” #1, the first US comic by Gaiman and McKean, had a huge impact on me. Like “The Killing Joke,” once I finished reading it, I read it all over again. This series was just beautifully crafted and a breath of fresh air in American comics.

Like many American readers, I discovered Alan Moore’s work when he took over Swamp Thing. Issue 29 was one of the first ones I bought. I just scanned this unforgettable double page spread by the superb team of Stephen Bissette and John Totleben. It was colored by Tatjana Wood.

On the left is the first comic appearance of Richard Corben's signature character Den. On the right his last. Thirty years later, they are all being collected and presented as five hardcovers by Dark Horse, as part of the Richard Corben Library.

Despite the fact that starting in 1992 Richard Corben finished his artwork incorporating digital imagery, he never stopped drawing each page on paper as a first step. This is the last page of Den he ever drew in 1994. It will be reprinted in Den Volume 5, The Price of Memories.

Since Corben's first painting for the cover of Den was rejected (due to the nudity), he painted this second one, which became the one that was used, and perhaps his greatest painting.

I always wondered why Richard Corben created two paintings for the European editions of Den. Corben wrote: “This was supposed to be the cover for the first edition (of Den), but most of the participating publishers thought it was too revealing.'

You may have seen the solicitations online for Corben's Den vol 4, which will be double sized. It features a never before seen illustration Corben did in 1991, where he combined hand drawing, 3-D software and Photoshop. Here is a look behind the scenes...
