If you’re like me, after the summer we’ve had, you’re already numb to these huge spikes. This one is the biggest but the reaction to it is underwhelming. It’s unfortunate these extremes are becoming normalized in our psyche. I wish it weren’t the case but it must be human nature.

Canada’s worst fire season on record visualized using NASA’s GEOS-FP model and FIRMS fire data. Just unfathomable. - 18.5 million hectares of forest scorched - 5% of Canada's forest area burned - Approx. 200,000 people evacuated - A total of over 6,500 fires

The mining exploration company Talon Metals seeks to construct a mine in the rural town of Tamarack, Minnesota. But mining the critical minerals needed for electric vehicle batteries could threaten local water supply and Indigenous culture. insideclimatenews.org/news/21112023/…

There's lots of announcements and news coming out of #COP28. I'm here to rank them for you from a climate scientist's perspective, using 🌴 for the wins and 🤦‍♀️ for the facepalms. Did I miss something? Let me know and I'll add it to this list! #ClimateAction #COP28FromHome 🧵

New stripe added for 2023... ...and it represents the hottest year yet. The climate stripes, designed here at the University, show rising average annual temperatures across the world and Ed Hawkins says last year was "off the end of the scale.” More: rdg.ac/3H6wDqY

Breaking News! Code UFB!!! I just had to extend the y-axis to accommodate yesterday's record breaking global sea surface temperature anomaly of 0.76°C above the 1991-2020 mean.

Your periodic reminder that less ice at the Arctic is consistent with a weaker jet stream that allows cold air to drift down into the Great Plains. The frigid temps you're experiencing happen BECAUSE of a warming planet, not in spite of it.

We live in extraordinary times, when a daily global temperature of 1.65°C above pre-industrial brings down the year-to-date average (now 1.70°C), and a 365-day running mean of 1.56°C above pre-industrial gets zero attention on mainstream media. These are the days of our lives.

I oscillate between yellow and orange most of the time. On low anxiety days I can dip into green; on the bad days I dip into red.😅 How about you?

I'm so glad they got this unraveled jackass on video at the NABJ so everyone can see how unhinged and hypocritical he is. MAJOR props to this journalist who remained cool and poised, under the circumstances.

A stark reminder this morning that Trump's policies could emit double the CO2 that clean energy saved GLOBALLY over the last five years -- or the equivalent of the yearly emissions of the EU and Japan.
