Doug Ford is making my life in Toronto — and that of many other young adults — increasingly difficult thestar.com/opinion/contri… via @torontostar

Wait so who’s going to fund the $210,000,000? Won’t this come out of taxpayer money? Aren’t some taxpayers drivers? So aren’t drivers paying for this? Also wondering… how much will destroying speed cameras cost? How will we make up the lost revenue? Fordnation logic is wild!

Doug Ford (@fordnation) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Starting today, cash-grab municipal speed cameras are no longer allowed in Ontario. Instead, we’re supporting proactive, proven safety measures like speed bumps, roundabouts and better signage that slow drivers down without making life more expensive.

Province shuts down the most successful traffic calming method as of TODAY, paid for by speeders in school zones, to replace it with a set of less effective calming measures, to be paid for by taxpayers.

Doug Ford Doug - to make your case for the ASE Bans, you rejected facts/data/research supporting their usage, you made grossly misleading statements, and you lied. That's not my or anyone's opinion, that is a fact! #dougford #onpoli

Doug Ford We've already had a pedestrian struck and killed at a site where a cam was removed in Niagara - good job! And what about first responders? Have you ever tried to navigate a speed bump in a firetruck? Or in an ambo with a spinal patient? Every death is on Doug Ford.

Doug Ford Speed cameras are proven safety measures too, Doug. Cameras are a way municipalities can actually fund those other pieces of infrastructure by fining people who are breaking the law, it's that simple.

Kate Dupuis (@drkateto) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Doug Ford “We’re supporting” = taxpayers are now on the hook for $210,000,000 in new “measures”, plus the costs of dismantling evidence-informed safety cameras, all because Fordnation staffers couldn’t stop speeding and got fed up of paying $$$ fines for their behaviour.

I know people like to make pronouncements about how policies will/won't work, but it's worth noting that individual organizations will (and should) choose policies that work best for them. Fare free transit is a good example. Making it work requires work. nytimes.com/2025/11/18/cli…

Detail: "The two-year pilot program proved so popular that the City Council voted this summer to extend it another year, paying for it with a 1 percent increase in utility taxes and by doubling most public parking rates to $2 from $1." Lesson: get a pilot+data+buy-in+funding.

Detail: "Ridership has surpassed prepandemic levels by 18 percent. Bus drivers say they’re navigating less congested streets." Lesson: measure all the things (be holistic, not prescriptive or proscriptive) and collect objective and subjective feedback from different sources.

Moaz Ahmad (@yyzmya) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Detail: "People drove 1.8 million fewer miles on city streets, according to government calculations, and emissions dropped by 24,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year. That’s the equivalent of taking 5,200 vehicles off the roads." Lesson: Aim for positive, achievable goals.

Moaz Ahmad (@yyzmya) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Detail: "But there was eagerness for fare-free buses to stay, she said. “The transit system is one of the greatest tools communities have to combat climate change & reduce emissions,” she said. “You can make a pretty immediate impact.”" Lesson: clear+quick wins lead to success.

Moaz Ahmad (@yyzmya) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Detail: "“You can make buses free, but it’s also important to make them convenient & appealing,” said Sarah Gardner, the city’s climate action coordinator." Lesson: Multi-faceted problems are best addressed with multi-pronged solutions. It's important to plan, deliver & measure.

Moaz Ahmad (@yyzmya) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Detail: "There were early concerns that fare-free travel would heap extra burdens on bus drivers...Yet several drivers said that not having to ask passengers for payment or transfers has led to less friction with riders." Lesson: Engage the drivers. Listen a lot, and carefully.

Moaz Ahmad (@yyzmya) 's Twitter Profile Photo

"It also speeds up travel, [drivers] said, because no one was delaying things by rummaging for money. According to the city, on-time arrivals have increased by 13 percent." Lesson: Look for the unexpected, and be prepared for surprises...including the good/positive surprises.

Local note: Burlington, Ontario is looking at fare-free transit system-wide and has gradually been expanding fare-free transit for targeted groups. So if you have interest in this topic, do keep an eye out for what Burlington and Burlington Transit do.

This must go so hard if you think there have been two separate councillors named Brad Bradford in the last five years and it was the other Brad who voted for this under a completely different mayor.
