RCPsych, joined by leading health and social care organisations, is calling on MPs and the UK Government to reject plans to extend police powers - to detain and restrain people in crisis - to medical practitioners, under reforms of the Mental Health Bill in England and Wales.

HM Government has now formally tabled an amendment for the next stage of the Mental Health Bill which would reverse the below. If successful, police powers under s135/136 of the Mental Health Act 1983 will *NOT* be extended to non-police professionals.
