Maybe we should take more about how evangelicals have an age problem, too. They aren't that different than mainline Prots. In 2008, 28% were 18-35. In 2020, it was 20% For mainline it was 21% down to 17%. 51% of evangelicals are now over the age of 55. It's 58% for mainline.

This is worth a listen, but I find it baffling that people continue to buy the myth (repeated here) that the Religious Right of the 1980s/1990s was a movement of previously apolitical Americans who were really concerned about abortion... theatlantic.com/podcasts/archi…

Very happy to announce that my book, The End of Empathy, received honorable mention for the 2021 ⁦⁦APSA⁩ Hubert Morken Award. ⁦I’m especially grateful to the many ⁦APSA Religion & Politics Section 11⁩ members who provided feedback along the way. oxford.universitypressscholarship.com//mobile/view/1…

There's a really nice piece in the WaPo from @mccrummenWaPo about a growing explicitly political, religious movement claiming supernatural powers at the command of prophets in skinny jeans with sophisticated audio-visual setups. I'm here to add some social science. 1/

It’s amazing how often the older books you order online turn out to have been owned by semi-famous historical figures - in this case, the Nobel-winning physicist Arthur Compton (no relation).

Very cool to see research from Chapman University undergrads linked in this article from today’s NY Times. Turns out that while nearly half of Americans believe in ghosts, only 9 percent report being afraid of them. Not sure what to make of this… nytimes.com/2021/10/28/sty…

For all the talk of progressive evangelicals, Ryan Burge 📊 wanted to take a deep dive. How big is this group? And, what do they actually believe about policy? religioninpublic.blog/2021/11/09/in-…

This article of mine (with Chloe Thurston) illustrates Jonathan Ladd's point about how abortion politics evolved from divisions along denominational lines to partisan ones. California was ahead of the curve. Retweeting, as they say, for no particular reason.

Very happy to see this review of THE END OF EMPATHY from @GaryAdlerJr in the JSSR: "The book is a great example of mixed-method historical scholarship... It is a must-read to understand what happened [to cause the rise of modern evangelicalism] and why.” onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11…

Starting off 2022 with a bang, Paul Djupe shows that the common report that Americans don't want rel and pol mixing is just wrong - they just don't want other people's religion mixing with their politics. And support grows with perceived threat. religioninpublic.blog/2022/01/03/con…

Please help me spread the word - I'm hiring (!) for the Data for Political Research minor I just started at flourishing LAC Denison University, just outside of Columbus, Ohio. It's a one year VAP for now, but extendable. We're looking for someone who studies politics with 1/3

Reading John Compton's book on rise and fall of mainline ecumenical activism. Striking how growth in local councils of churches helped advance the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Here’s my analysis ⁦at WaPo @monkeycageblog⁩ of the Supreme Court’s big religion cases this term, which focus on discrimination against religion, and how the decisions fit into the political environment. washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/…

I’m a bit late to this, but Jennifer Rubin said some very nice things about my book, The End of Empathy, in yesterday’s column. Among other things, it’s “a fascinating study”! washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/…

When I talk about the end times, I get asked two questions: Aren't there different schools with very different worldviews? And aren't end times believers apathetic because the end is near? I'm now giving my answers to these questions with new data. 1/6 religioninpublic.blog/2023/04/19/apo…

For 70 years, surveys asked “What is your present religion, if any?” This presumes responses describe the church they attend. But what if not? *They find 20% say it does not* in a new open access article JSSRjournal Paul Djupe Ryan Burge 📊 @docchrisg religioninpublic.blog/2023/08/24/rel…
