Every July 4, I take time to read and reflect on Frederick Douglass's "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" I'll share some passages/remarks here, when his words, now 168 years old, are just as relevant as ever. thenation.com/article/archiv…

Belatedly, I didn't watch as many of the Oscar movies as I normally do, but The Sound of Metal was one of the best pieces of art about addiction I've ever seen. Made the Serenity Prayer click in a way it never had before after years of meditation. Can't recommend highly enough.

Hope folks realize that a part of the reason the Right pounced on “woke” and now use it as a meaningless catch-all pejorative is because folks on the Left stripped it from its context in the Black experience, and made it mean “excessive social awareness.” It didn’t mean that.

Bamboozled is top 3 Spike for me, and the absolute best moment is the Mooney vignette, practically a short film within the film. Effortlessly hilarious. One of the all time greats. Rest easy. youtu.be/f3Gtn9yKV9I

This is disqualifying...another telling failure. We’re at the point where we can and should reframe these errors as willful—by both the writers themselves and by the paper refusing to hire a staff that wouldn’t let this happen?

New article from me, on the tactics (and limits) of white allyship during Portland BLM protests in 2020 -- and how media complicates things further. HT @brcreech for helping me get much better at all this. Would love your thoughts, Christopher David! journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/13…
