Wishing my many Italian and Romanist friends, a very happy Ferragosto, and remembering the ancient Feriae Augusti through the life-size, marble Via Labicana statue of Augustus, himself, as Pontifex Maximus. Excavated in 1910 and on display in Rome’s Palazzo Massimo alle Terme.🏛️

On 15 August, an astonishing eighty-five years ago, MGM’s glorious musical adaptation of L Frank Baum’s THE WIZARD OF OZ (US, Victor Fleming, 1939) received its Hollywood premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and film history was made! 🌈 #Garland #Hamilton #SurrenderDorothy

The opportunity to register objections to the demolition of the remarkably resilient 1929 entrance façade of the former Regal/ABC cinema has now ended. The matter will be considered by Committee early next week and we can only hope that it will be preserved for Glasgow’s future!

Today is the anniversary of the dedication of one of my favourite Roman temples: the Temple of Portunus on the Forum Boarium. Built by the Aemilii in the 3rd or 4th century BC and rebuilt c.80 BC, it was ‘the Church of St Mary of Egypt’ from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Forty years ago today ELECTRIC DREAMS was released in the UK. Starring Lenny von Dohlen, Virginia Madsen, and Maxwell Caulfied, it’s a sweet, silly, funny, peak 1980s, romance. We saw it together about 9 months later on VHS and it provided our first dance in both 2006 and 2016!

A delightful summer afternoon by the Medway, courtesy of the ever-fabulous Claire Louise Amias and Jonathan. Engaging discussions with delightful people and, finally, a long-overdue opportunity to meet and spend time with the sparkling, witty Paul Lavers and Érin Geraghty. Such fun! 🥂

Having established the Pax Romana, assumed the Principate, and developed a building programme that, allegedly, transformed Rome from brick to marble, Augustus died, at seventy-five, 2,010 years ago today, the first and greatest of Rome’s emperors. ‘Acta est fabula, plaudite!’

Today, Committee will decide upon the fate of Charles McNair’s 1929 Regal façade on Sauchiehall Street. In the shortest time, we’ve obtained advice from experts and rallied the support of politicians; we can only hope there’s room for Glasgow’s architectural past in her future…!

I’d pay good money to see the extraordinary Anita Dobson in the West End, as Mrs Lovett in Sondheim’s SWEENEY TODD. I can’t believe that it hasn’t already happened; it must…! 🥧 🪒 🩸

Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the actor and activist, the magnificent Bette Bourne, an extraordinary performer and a charming, delightful, witty person, who will be greatly missed. Fondest thoughts and deepest condolences to Paul. Vale!

Following the recent debacle surrounding the beautiful 1929 façade of Sauchiehall Street’s former ABC/Regal Cinema, may I ask you to take a moment to sign this petition to save listed Scottish buildings from demolition. Thank you!

On the ninety-sixth anniversary of his birth, remembering the magnificent Charles Gray (1928-2000). A classical actor, who became an imposing genre film and TV star, he possessed one of the most elegantly distinctive voices in the business. #Hammer #Bond #RockyHorror #Holmes

Augustus Venator: unbidden, but naturally - and elegantly - revealing more than a millennium of breeding upon the great Hungarian plain. Pheasants (and parakeets) of South London, beware…! #Vizsla

Astonishing! Sir Alan Gardiner and his sign-list were just featured on BBC quiz show, POINTLESS. Sadly, neither team chose correctly! #Egyptology #Hieroglyphs #Egyptomania

Four episodes - midpoint - into Charlie Covell’s extraordinary reworking of modern Olympians and Græco-Roman mythologies, KAOS: clever, witty, moving, and thoroughly engaging. The cinematography and production design are impressive, complementing some wonderful casting ! 🏛️⚡️🌈

After this evening’s episodes of Charlie Covell’s KAOS, it’s apparent that the Olympian deities are not unacquainted with their Egyptian predecessors, as Cliff Curtis’ Poseidon wears a gold cartouche, engraved with impossible to read hieroglyphs. #Greece #Rome #Egypt #Reception

Last night, we polished off the final episodes of Charlie Covell’s extraordinary KAOS. Completely engaging television drama with a detailed but inventive understanding of the disparate and often contradictory ancient sources. I look forward to Season Two...! #NoSpoilers 🏛️⚡️🍇🌈
