This Sunday, cities around the world will be marking #WorldCarfreeDay. Better Streets for Birmingham and the Highgate Community will be reclaiming one street for an afternoon, remembering Mayar Yahia, and demanding permanent pedestrianization. All welcome. Join us!

One thing that immediately becomes clear when you click #WorldCarfreeDay is the transnational scale of the growing movement to reclaim public space for everyone. Here in Birmingham, you can join us as we honor the life of Mayar Yahia and demand an end to traffic violence.

I’ve been struggling for a way to say this. We know that the West’s intellectual, moral and ethical universalism has long been aspirational, observed in the breech, riddled with exclusion clauses and double-standards. But the past year feels like a sharp, qualitative degradation.

To ignore the role of highway inspectors and road engineers in enabling these incidents is to ensure they'll keep happening.

It is impossible to imagine what the Yahia family and the Highgate community have been put through. But this Sunday, it is possible to offer them our support, and to demand that the powers that be in Birmingham begin to address our city's #UKCarCulture crisis.

#WorldCarfreeDay is a reminder that retaking the public space of our streets from the private property of cars is a form of local action against the extractivist international system of Western domination over the resource rich global South.

Relevant to the infrastructure v. enforcement debate.... People return from holidays thinking "loved the beautiful pedestrian plazas and carfree areas." No one thinks "loved seeing so many police holding drivers to the rules in all the vast car space."

This is understandable. If I was in the leadership of a political party that had consistently supported a genocide for an entire year, I wouldn't want it discussed at conference either.

Sooner or later, everyone comes to see this.

Every time one of Birmingham's elected representatives appears in public, they should be asked whether they support the immediate creation of Mayar Yahia Square. Official inaction in the face of what this family and community are enduring is shameful.
