As the podcast tells us, It’s Just A Game. It’s fun, it’s entertainment and it certainly isn’t all real. The prize is real, the players are real, Fergus isn’t real (sorry) and Alan’s accent really isn’t real. But it doesn’t matter because…

What Alan does is brilliant. It’s a hyperreal version of a Scots Laird. It’s camp, it’s kitsch, it’s fabulous y’know? The multiple outfits were wonderful and having had the good luck to work closely with Alan I’m happy to tell you that he is…

Simply great. Great fun, great to work with and we did spend a lot of time laughing. But the character he plays is just that: a character. And that’s where reality blurs. If he isn’t meant to be really Scottish but more of a hyperreal version of it…

Then it works magnificently. And we buy into it because we want to. We’re willing accomplices in the watching of the game and the suspension of our disbelief because, at the dimming of the day, it’s just a game.

So, to finally answer the question that the chaps asked me, what do I think of the Scottish performances/characters, I’m totally on board with it because I know it isn’t meant to be really real but it is fun to dress up and play…
