UK debt interest payments by year. There are many longstanding structural reasons for our economic woes but a £50bn per annum jump in interest payments has turned a problem into an emergency.

Daniel is right. Increasingly worried that, for many on the restorationist right, “leaving the ECHR” is becoming synonymous with solving the problem. The reality is complete institutional and professional overhaul needed. Change the incentives, change the outcomes…

The Conservatives are in a perilous situation politically. The voters have stopped listening to them and they're not minded to forgive them any time soon. Dismissing the public's worry about crime and the collapsing trust in the justice system as "populism" is not wise.

The public are fed up of seeing judges making political statements or stretching the law to suit their worldview. It has to end. If judges want to be politicians they should step down. If not, they should be removed.

Hard agree. It’s not implausible that a debt crisis forces the Government into conducting emergency fiscal surgery that splits the Labour Party. They don’t have the luxury of returning to welfare / pensions reforms in fairer political winds. What happened to “insurgent Govt”?

On response rates alone it is easier to make the argument in the UK (than the US) for suspending the monthly job numbers given the response rate is 21% to the LFS, and only 43% to the CES....

Outstanding essay by Sam Ashworth-Hayes. Policy debates are often pointless where under today’s constitutional innovations the judiciary is granted “structural policymaking” power. Unwinding this needs to start in week one of whatever regime comes next… telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/08/1…

I am delighted to join the Centre for Social Justice as Senior Fellow. I know from my own personal experience how vital it is to get people into safe, secure housing with the right support. Housing First works & with the CSJ I’m determined to help make it a reality nationwide.
