Ted Toleman, the man who established the team that is now Alpine, has died at 86. He entered F1 in 1981 with the Toleman team and gave Senna his F1 break. He sold the team to Benetton in 1986. He was involved in powerboats and captained the first Virgin Atlantic Challenger

People often forget that Suzuka is close to the sea, although it is inland and uphill from the seaside towns of Shiroko and Tsu. Tsunami warnings for Japan after the Taiwan earthquake have now been removed. This is cheering news - as I'm on a train heading to Shiroko right now...
