If Chicago's pension funds were passively managed in 2024 (instead of spread across 80+ management firms), the city would have saved ~$40,000,000 in management fees. And returns would have been about 25% better.

Complicated permitting requirements and ever increasing fees are pushing out the mom and pop developers. The result is an uglier and institutionalized urban fabric.

Weakening city council members ability to veto land use changes is the best argument *for* the charter revisions. The reforms will lead to much more meaningful democratic input and responsiveness to a broader public.

This is yet another reason to have a city charter: time to codify aldermanic prerogative and limit it to assisting with ward level city services. Planning processes should be primarily vested in prof planners in a planning dept. Alders have input citywide through code changes.

I'm still wondering how it's possible anyone who took Econ 101 thinks a tax on consumer spending is inflationary. Tariffs will cause some short term price distortions, but higher taxes are deflationary. Higher taxes on consumer spending = the most deflationary policy possible.

Another 3-4 month delay in property tax bills? It's bad enough that many property owners will get hit with hard to digest reassessments. But to add on an additional layer of unpredictabiliity with the timing of tax payments is inexcusable.

Honestly Kaegi should just resign and save us all the brain damage. Let's say payment is delaying by 3 months on this $8 bil. Most Chicago municipal bonds are paying +/- 7% right now. That's 1.75% interest paid on $8 Bil resulting in an extra $140 million loss to local tax revs.

YIMBYs often see themselves on the opposite team as preservationists, but there's a massive amount of overlap. The same rules that make it hard to build new make it even harder to work around existing historic buildings and maintain NOAH. Abundant Housing Illinois

The 'local democracy' trick used by NIMBY homeowners: - vote against new housing, causing a shortage - renters are priced out of the city, where they aren't eligible to vote - housing shortage gets worse

This is a gain for no one but the developers pocketbook. No density increase, no improvement to the built environment, no increase in craftsmanship or quality. Only a loss of NOAH for some solipsist to increase their net worth without regards to the world around or after them.

You get "community input" when you vote for your local councilpersons. There should be no "community input process" beyond that.
