Beyond his pioneering use of industrial materials, #AlexanderCalder had a deep respect for humble ones—for “Tree” and "Red Sticks," Calder used bits of discarded objects such as glass, mirror fragments, and wood. On view at the gallery through January 28.

Out of #AlexanderCalder’s experimentation “drawing” with wire came “Cirque Calder,” (1926–1931) a small-scale circus designed to be in motion. Calder continued to create wire sculptures within the circus theme throughout his career—as seen here in “Acrobats” (c. 1927).

For New York–based artist Davide Balula, the material and the immaterial, prosaic and poetic, have always been of equal concern. For "Every Kind of Wind, Calder and the 21st Century," Balula presents three works as part of his series entitled "A.I. Generated Instructions."

“Helen Wills II” (1928) shows the athlete in a moment of action. Depicting the American tennis star Helen Wills Moody reaching for a forehand shot, the sculpture lends a precarious bend to her body, with dramatically extended limbs. #alexandercalder
