TIL you can't FedEx computer software to Brazil as it is listed under import prohibitions.

Makes it especially tough to compete with the Internet

Mario Montalbetti, who completed his PhD in Linguistics at MIT in 1984 under the supervision of Noam Chomsky, should win some prize for one of the best starts to a PhD thesis

“I crushed that exam!” → exam went well
“I bombed that exam!” → exam went poorly

It took me a few years of living in the US until I could reliably remember the distinction between crushing vs bombing

TIL: In the 1950s there were several companies that sold kits of built-it-yourself Helicopters!

The Adams-Wilson Hobbycopter was one of those. A single seat, fully fledged helicopter powered by a motorcycle engine.

Cost: $900 for the kit, $35 for just the plans

Freeman Dyson is a shinning example of how you can lead a life full of accomplishments and adventure but still reach the age of 96 with child-like curiosity and humility.

As somebody with a name that a lot of people struggle to pronounce, watching this MRI of a person talking makes me much more empathetic about it

Recently visited a US WWII submarine. Things I learned:
-built in ~6 months
-only cooks got to shower regularly
-powered by batteries & electric motor while underwater
-torpedos would sometimes take circular runs and head back to the firing submarine!

👇👀torpedo under the bed!
