The first female majority JMPP jury was in 1989. Until 1985 it was not unusual to see an all-male jury. The 1980s brought a new awareness about the visibility and representation of women within the arts. The 1989 jury: Barbara Toll, Therese Oulton, Kate Whiteford and Tim Hilton.

Why Paint? 'I prefer painting as a medium because it has an element of unpredictability. You set out to do something, but end up making something else that surprises you. Like music, painting provides food for the soul.' Sneh Mehta with her painting ‘Him & Her’, JMPP2016

Why Paint? 'I have always loved painting. When I was working in the NHS I found it a great way of relieving stress – to escape and switch off. I become so completely absorbed in the process that I forget about any worries.' Mandy Payne with her painting 'Brutal' JMPP 2014

Why paint? 'A lot of what I paint is based on memories of real events or from dreams. I'm aware we can't photograph those mental images, so painting them and including text seems a direct way of relating them.' Emma Talbot and her painting, ‘You come to me in a dream’, JMPP2016.

Why paint? 'I have a desire to depict things I see and feel. When I’m deeply moved or affected by something, the most direct, quickest and considered way to describe the feeling that elicits is to paint it.' Alessandro Raho and his painting 'Jessica', JMPP2014.
