///BREAKING/// Lawyers for former House Speaker Michael J. Madigan are asking for 5 yrs probation-no jail time- for the 83-year-old when he’s sentenced in two weeks on sweeping corruption charges, citing in part his age and long history of public service. Details to come.

Among the hundreds of letters and accolades submitted by Madigan's attorneys was this one from the late Gov. James R. Thompson:

From Madigan defense: "He will never hold public office again. He has suffered continuous public embarrassment based on the charges. As one example, Mike was publicly compared to a mob boss. Politicians also continue to use Mike as a cheap political shot"

Madigan's defense also says his concern is for his wife, Shirley, whose health is declining. "One day of imprisonment for him will upend her entire life...Mike's presence is medically necessary to provide the direct assistance, supervision, and emotional support required"
