But the CJ started asking him questions relevant to that suit (and not the joint application), like who the witness was, whether he had expressed unhappiness to his lawyer before, why he didn’t bring this point up at appeal, etc etc.

After the court hearing, Rahim was given about an hour to meet his family, until about 2am. They’d been waiting in prison all afternoon and all night to see him, distraught that the wait for the verdict was so long without any explanation.

His family asked him if he wanted to make a request to the prison to delay his execution by a few hours (instead of the usual 6am) so he would have a bit more time, but he said no, he knew it’s the end for him and he wanted to go. “I just want to rest,” he told his sister.

Rahim also thanked his family for having fought so hard for him, and told his sister to let everyone outside know that he was grateful for everything that was done for him, and that he was sorry for the trouble he had caused everyone. Rest In Peace, Abdul Rahim bin Shapiee.

And then a few hours later he was executed. This prisoner, acting for himself, in a court, unrepresented, pleading points for his life, hours before he was hung. How does it come to this? This is what the death penalty does to a justice system.

A great statement from the ICJ which shows that despite Singapore saying it respects access to justice, independence of lawyers, rule of law + fair trial, in practice it has departed from those well enshrined principles: icj.org/singapore-halt… Eleos Justice Christopher Ward

2 Dec 2005 Van Nguyen was executed - neck snapped - in Singapore - one of an endless stream of senseless executions. This week Singapore passed new law to make it absurdly hard to run life saving appeals against pending executions. The world sees and condemns such shameful laws.

#Singapore wants to hang Tangaraju on Wednesday (26 April) for abetting an attempt to traffick 1kg of #cannabis. He never handled the drugs he's accused of attempting to traffick. He had neither lawyer nor interpreter when the police took his statement. wethecitizens.net/the-first-exec…

I don't care if you are in favour of the #DeathPenalty, if you believe that it's necessary for public order or security. Even if you do, you cannot look at Tangaraju's case and tell me this is justice. #Singapore talks a big game about "rule of law" but we shame ourselves.

On 29.4.2015, 8 people including Myuran + Andrew were executed in Indonesia. The struggle to end all executions continues. This week’s events in Singapore - a hanging, for 1kg cannabis! after worrying legal journey, just highlights how cruel, outdated, absurd the deathpenalty is.
