Congratulations to all of those who have been offered pupillage today. For those who didn’t, I’ve had several candidates who struggled to get interviews last year message me today saying they’ve been offered pupillage. So keep going. That could be you next year.

Last year I made what I thought was a speculative Recorder application at best, but now this has happened. Appreciate all the messages I’m getting about it. Very happy but still a fair amount of disbelief. Hopefully I’ll have come to terms with it by the time I start sitting…

Unfortunately I saw an example of this today, where an advocate arrived at court and berated the usher because a lift was broken. Treating ushers, clerks etc with respect is just common decency, but if you don’t, good luck for when you need something from them. And you will.

A recorder today, upon being told that counsel "would discuss matters with his client over lunch", responded by telling him, "No, if you need time I will give it to you now. You and your client are entitled to a full lunch hour". Give this bloke a full time job please.

For all its benefits (and there are many), Legal Twitter needs to get better at handling conflict. We really should be able to air our grievances more constructively. An unwavering belief that you are right is not a good reason to relentlessly attack colleagues.

Contender for cross examination answer of the year today. It was (quite properly) put to a witness that he was lying, to which he responded “I object to that question. This is a civil court and I expect you to be civil.” Outstanding. And yes, he was found to have lied.

As we reach the end of Humblebrag Day, just enough time to say that I'm delighted to be ranked in Employment and Education in the Legal 500 again, and that I am grateful as ever for the solicitors who take the time to say nice things about me. Billable Hour donation duly made.

For those attending The Bar Council’s Pupillage Fair today I’ll be on hand with Joel Semakula at 4:30pm to answer questions about making the most of your pupillage applications. Looking forward to seeing you all there.
