If you'd asked me a year ago, superposition would have been by far the reason I was most worried that mechanistic interpretability would hit a dead end. I'm now very optimistic. I'd go as far as saying it's now primarily an engineering problem -- hard, but less fundamental risk.

I feel like we're not making a big enough deal about starlink...google got all this press for years about their balloon internet which afaict never went anywhere, and then starlink went and provided video-call speeds beamed down from space to a <10lb dish

People have been talking mostly about Opus (understandably), but I'm also really excited about Haiku! Super cheap, fast, and pretty darn smart. Really excited to see what people build with it!

Why is the US not a leader in photolithography? Electronics assembly I get, it relies on cheap labour that we'd rather offshore, but why doesn't the US competitor to ASML? Seems like it's applied physics which the US should be very good at

Estimates of when Waymo will be legalized across the state? Could California legislature do it? Is it county-by-county? Do the feds need to be involved for the interstates? I have no idea how this works but I never want to drive myself long distance again

California came so close to banning hidden fees at restaurants but backpedalled at the last minute despite overwhelming public support :/ Directly consumer-facing policies like this should just be voted on by the people online instead of by politician middlemen

I'll be at ICML next week! I'm a long-time Anthropic engineer/researcher, & I want to meet new folk, so DM me if you wanna walk & talk! * Academic engineers. If you maintain an open-source LLM lib, if you're the one at your lab who everyone asks to fix their CUDA issues, DM me!

I spent years on Twitter not blocking people, afraid of an echo chamber / missing out on "important" discourse, but I've given up now and just block/mute after a few offences of very-bad-faith argument or blatant offensive content. Doesn't feel great but my blood pressure's down.

Are there any good arguments against liquid democracy, i.e. "direct democracy for all issues but you can select any other person to handle your vote on any issue"? Idk much about polisci and only recently heard this idea, it seems...good?

Anyone hoping a trump/vance/musk presidency will be tech-forward should pay close attention to high-skilled immigration. I'll be (delightfully) shocked if EB1/O1/etc. aren't worse off in 2025 vs 2024

i often want to make simple android apps for myself (claude should easily one-shot the code) but the process boilerplate -- just making a hello world app and getting it onto my phone -- seems too annoying. am i being a baby or are there now easy ways to bootstrap?
