Wall lizards vary extensively in neural crest cell associated traits. How does neural crest cells development influence the evolution of these traits? Here we lay the foundations to tackle this question. Stay tuned for more work from this system. doi.org/10.1101/2024.0…

New perspective published in PNASNews about fluorescence in tetrapods. Briefly: Fluorescence is probably usually not a visual signal, but that doesn't mean it isn't interesting! pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… w/ Michaël Nicolaï Javier Ábalos Liliana D'Alba Matthew Shawkey & Jonathan Goldenberg

Glowing review in @PnasNews shorturl.at/Eump4! Big shoutout to Jonathan Goldenberg and Michaël Nicolaï for prompting this collective "ACKHYUALLY..." by wrangling a herd of colour nerds into a coherent discussion on tetrapod fluorescence! Read on for a TLDR summary 1/13

Writing this piece has been a lot of fun - read on to discover some of the most unique animal adaptations to rising temperatures, including roos licking their forearms to cool down! 🦘🌡️

My first chapter is out! This was an enormously challenging project but I learned a lot and am very excited to share with you the hidden world of ultraviolet coloration in snakes. nature.com/articles/s4146…

I am very proud and happy this one is out! We speculate and show species interactions to regulate spatial species assembly processes by its impact on dispersal. With great contributions from pairwise interactions to complex communities, from ecology to evolution and back!

World Congress of Herpetology is coming up soon! Excited to listen to talks on #coloration as adaptation to changing environments from Kyle Summers, Rasmus Nielsen, Hayley Layne Crowell 🐍🦎☀️, Jonathan Goldenberg, Udita Bansal, Liliana d’Alba, and Doris Preininger on Wed. 7! Come and join us for a colorful symposium!

I wrote a little Blogpost about how to make figures interactive, using the python library bokeh: luerig.net/posts/interact… I use this quite often to better understand multivariate phenotypic data (e.g., in PCA), especially if it's abstract (e.g. image embeddings from AI models)

For those interested in reptiles, eggs or ‘funny’ pop culture references. Come see my egg-citing talk ‘What, if anything, is a hard egg?’ Tuesday at 10:45 in Great Hall D (600). #WCH10

Like a master craftsman, animals can mold basic materials into a variety of crystalline structures to perform functions ranging from pattern formation to camouflage and vision. The underlying mechanisms of this process have long remained a mystery. nature.com/articles/s4158…

It actually happened. The final paper of my PhD is now published! Why are sunbirds so colourful? Apparently there is no easy solution, but genetic and geographic differentiation seem to be the key players! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ec…
