Katie joined our group on behalf of her sister Sasha. Aged just 16, she was raped, stabbed more than 100 times, and her body set on fire. Katie and her family believe her killer met the existing criteria for a whole life order but he was only given a minimum sentence of 35 years.

Paula joined us on behalf of her adopted son Tony who had both legs amputated after abuse by his birth parents. Paula campaigned successfully for Tony's Law, meaning abusers could now face life imprisonment but this is only the maximum sentence technically available.

What do we want to achieve? We want victims, their families & the public views to be at the heart of sentencing policy. At the minute so many people are unhappy with the sentences people receive for serious crimes-it isn’t right and it’s time for that to change.

Jeremy & Susan Everard have joined our group because the murderer of their daughter received a whole life order and they felt that delivered justice. But they know how few people receive that and they want to help change that for other victims and their families.

“Although nothing can alleviate the sense of loss, it is a relief to us that our daughter's murderer received a whole life order. It made us feel that the enormity of his crime was recognised and that our daughter's life was valued." Jeremy & Susan Everard

The Independent Sentencing Review has nothing to say about what victims and families want to see when it comes to proper punishment. Deeply disappointing. Our full response
