Famous pivots: X Twitter began as Odeo, a podcast discovery tool, which pivoted due to iTunes dominating the niche. Twitter gave employees 2 wks to come up with new ideas, and so the drastic change to a status updating, micro-blogging platform was born and they ran with it.

Pivots-2: PayPal was always payments, but in 99 it was for handheld computers to 'beam' payments! After partnering with x.com in '99 (Elon's plans for X started all that time ago😮), PayPal became the preferred tool for eBay sellers, propelling it to its fame.

Pivots-3: Groupon started as The Point, a fundraising tool for social good, which only released funds when a 'tipping point' was reached. Groupon was a side project with the same 'tipping point' concept, unlocking deals with enough activity & it quickly grew to what it is today.

Pivots-4: Starbucks the infamous coffee shop started off in 1971 selling espresso makers and coffee beans. Schultz, who fell in love with espresso bars in Milan in '83, built the first European-style coffeehouses in the US, and the rest is history!

Pivots-5: Nokia began as a Finnish paper mill in 1865! They created rubber goods, electronics and telecommunications devices, and eventually, their first mobile phone in 1992. The genius game of Snake was launched on their phones in '97, and they got us hooked from then!

Pivots-6: Flickr was an online role-playing game. The game included a photo-sharing tool, which turned out to be one of the most popular aspects of the game, so they pivoted to Flickr. Then, Yahoo bought them in 2005, proving to be one of Yahoo's most successful acquisitions!

Pivots-7: 任天堂株式会社 existed several centuries before Super Mario and Donkey Kong! They made everything from playing cards to vacuum cleaners and even a short-stay hotel chain (also called a "love hotel" 🤭) . Then started producing games and consoles in '66!

Pivots-8: Instagram began as a check-in app that included a photo element. The creators worried it had too much clutter and would never gain traction. So they rebuilt a version of the app that focused solely on photography—it was clean and simple, and clearly it paid off.
