"If we want the Westside to remain a welcoming place –not just for the wealthy, but for everyone –we have to make it possible for more people to live here. That means building more homes. Enter SB 79..." losangelesblade.com/2025/07/31/the…

On April 30th, Josh Smith of Montana Knife Company said you won't have to worry about tariffs if you buy American. Last week, he realized his costs are going up bc he imports equipment and steel. And so do his suppliers. IMO many people aren't aware of how much they import.

The City of Los Angeles could largely solve its $1 billion budget shortfall by allowing more homes to be built near its transit stations, according to a report out today from Streets For All, an LA-based safe streets and land use advocacy organization.

In the 1400's China's Admiral Zheng He led seven voyages in ships so vast & magnificent they astonished the world. But conservative Confucian rule ended the voyages — and China ceded the oceans of discovery just as the European age began. Same energy today--but in reverse.

The sick irony: - L.A. started out on right foot w/ its housing element - then L.A. produced an *awful* rezoning program + faux analysis to implement it - now L.A. is telling the Legislature, "don't pass SB 79 unless it exempts cities w/ approved housing elements" 1/6

Twitter is a niche echo chamber etc etc but a bunch of national political figures chiding the mayor of LA for her retrograde housing policies seems like a vibe shift

Saturday it was the California Democratic Party; Sunday, it was Katie Porter. Today, Barbara Lee announces she's supporting SB79. It's not even noon on Monday and the bill is already having a banner week!

Every dot on this map is a parcel that has been redeveloped in the past 15 years. Yellow is single-family* Green is duplex Red is apartment building Notice something? In single-family zones, a massive number of homes have been torn down and replaced with mansions

every critical review of abundance does this thing where it very abstractly denounces the concept of deregulation because it can’t defend why it should remain illegal to build apartments on most residential land or why it should take 30 years to build a transmission line

Almost eight years ago, SB827, the original transit-oriented housing bill, died in committee Seeing NIMBYs kill a common-sense bill is what turned me into a housing activist, and today, we have finally won. Progress is possible, but you have to fight for it.

Why are single-stair buildings actually SAFER than two stair buildings in some circumstances? It seems counter intuitive… obviously, more redundancy is better, right?
