I imagine these three norms would make a great difference.

One of my earliest memories, period, is of my kindergarten teacher reading The Polar Express. I then cut my teeth on fantasy. I then fell in love with the classics, which I still read today. And as my 11th grade English teacher predicted adult life would include non-fiction.

The whole point of being a scholar is to seek the truth and speak the truth as best you grasp the truth. If I were an academic who was so full of fear that I couldn't say what I think is true, I'd go get a more respectable (and remunerative) job selling insurance or used cars.
