Let this sink in: 35% of faculty on job market are there SIMPLY to gain a counter-offer to renegotiate terms of their current position!! Postdocs like me have to compete with them!! This CO culture is a painful reminder of how toxic #academia often is. #phdchat #AcademicTwitter

31. Also get your rooftop solar system built when you have scaffolding up for something else, 'cos scaffolding is expensive. Ideally build it when you’re building the roof, there will never be a better time. Rooftop solar mandates are good and should be more common.

Not quite sure how to articulate this but: in the course of my work, I'm constantly encountering good people, people working hard to change the world for the better & improve other people's lives. In gov't, in nonprofits, in biz, they're all over the place. However ...

On Friday we hosted the first "Canadian Separations Symposium" at U of T. It was a great event, and we hope to do a similar event annually going forward. It was fabulous to get to meet colleagues and see the great work going on Separations Science here in Canada.

It’s worth repeating many times that the new progressive Mayor of Toronto, @OliviaChow, rides her bike for transportation and doesn’t have a drivers licence. #Toronto

Was surprised to see PM2.5 levels in my home creep up last night to ~20 ug/m3. Higher levels outside. Bumped up filtration inside --> ~10 ug/m3 inside now. Again, super valuable in our apocalyptic world to get an indoor air quality monitor.

My philosophy, which I hope others will share, is to NEVER publish in a journal that I hear through the grapevine asks/requests potential authors to cite papers in their journal. This "impact-factor hacking" is straight-up unethical.

What does it take for Democrats to start playing hardball? Apparently not the Court arrogating to itself all the powers of their legislative or executive offices. Apparently not the justices engaging in open corruption and laughing off the idea they could be held accountable.

It is very funny that everyone understands housing supply affects prices when talking about AirBnB ("they converted these apartments and took them off the market!") but doesn't extrapolate that forward to construction ("how are these new apartments supposed to lower rents?")

Big news: U.S. Department of Education will begin notifying borrowers that their federal loans will be discharged following fixes to income driven repayment plans. This is a result of the Administration’s actions to ensure borrowers have an accurate count of payments qualifying for IDR forgiveness.

it is ludicrously dangerous to bike for transportation in most of the country and yet people act like you’re demanding gold-plated streets when you ask for protected bike lanes

'When in 2007 #Ljubljana closed 12 hectares of its city center to private cars, just 40% of residents approved. A decade later, no less than 97% were against reopening to motor traffic: “None of us can really imagine cars ever staging a comeback”.' —Melissa & Chris Bruntlett
