There is a reply to Dave's point here. I'm not saying it's a good reply. In fact, it's often horrendous. But common. The reply is, 'we did that story.'

In 2019, I wrote a thread on the difference between a 'ritual' view of communication and a 'transmission' model. Trump's motorcade on your TV screen transmits no information. It's all ritual. Click here for my thread. twitter.com/jayrosen_nyu/s…

The proper descriptor for Margorie Taylor Green is not 'ultra conservative,' says Oliver Darcy in today's Reliable Sources.

'Greene and some of her allies in Congress are something else: right-wing extremists. Why is that so hard for major newsrooms to say?'

When they do the processesion of cars and track his movements live, it's not journalism, not news. 'He's arrived at the court house' plays no part in informing the public . youtube.com/watch?v=zqkf2U… This is ritual communication. Closest cousin is a funeral. Or a Super Bowl parade.

Good day for this passage from my book, 'What Are Journalists For?' (1999, Yale University Press) where I try to explain what 'multiple perspectives' means in a way that most anyone can grasp.

While the major news outlets continue to obsess on 'both-sidesing' a five-alarm fire for the American Experiment, aided by reporters seeking to find “the fun” in politics... there are some folks who do get it. One of them is Chris Quinn.' inquirer.com/opinion/commen…

Frank Luntz is one of the authors of the events he brings before angry focus groups. He then seeks cultural standing as a kind of privileged listener to his earlier creations. And the news producers give it to him because they have their own 'we're so divided' text to read from.

Here's something you wanted. Dan Froomkin (PressWatchers.org) interviewed the editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Chris Quinn. presswatchers.org/2024/04/an-int…

Used to be the local and regional press took its cues from the nationals. Read this and you will see: Quinn is flipping that script, showing the way.

Want to know what happened with NPR this week? Read Margaret Sullivan theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

My read: too often the possible worlds are said to be two. Biased journalism soaking in ideology or some form of professional neutrality. Left out: 'here's where we're coming from' journalism.

'The political world mostly yawned.'

John Harwood concluded that the threat to democracy was real enough that journalism ought to view the political world through that lens. Read his debut column for Zeteo. zeteo.com/p/how-cancer-c…

He decided to call it The Stakes. 😎
