Medicine has thousands of eponyms. Most are named for doctors but a few eponyms honor patients. For example, Bacitracin, named for the bacteria Bacillus subtilis var Tracy, was first identified in a little girl โ€œTracy I.โ€ New post & medical history๐Ÿงต 1/ onepagericu.com/blog/magnanimoโ€ฆ

Take a look at the CBC in the graphic. 1. How would you describe it? 2. What is the differential dx? 2. What is the most likely dx? 3. Why is the RDW-CV (labeled RDW) increased, but not the RDW-SD? Answers to follow tomorrow at thebloodproject.com (search Unknown Case 3)

1/7 I tweeted a poll asking for the most likely diagnosis based on a CBC time series. Most of you came up with the right answer... vitamin B12 deficiency ๐Ÿ™Œ In liver disease, the macrocytosis would not typically appear and then disappear 8 weeks later.

Story time During one of my ER duties, I received a male patient in his late 40s whose chief complaint was abdominal pain. Initial impression in the previous hospital was heart attack. I begged to differ. I was more inclined to consider this as a case of acute pancreatitis.๐Ÿงต

1/3 2 WAYS TO EXPRESS THE RDW I posted a poll yesterday asking the most likely diagnosis based on just 2 lab results: 1. Normal RDW-SD (standard deviation) 2. Increased RDS-CV (coefficient of variation) The correct answer was thalassemia trait, which 24% guessed correctly.

โ€œThis new drug has an impressive NNT of 2!โ€ Sounds like a very good idea, doesnโ€™t it? But before we jump to conclusions, letโ€™s take a closer look. NNT, or Number Needed to Treat, tells us how many patients need to receive a treatment for one additional person to benefit,
