Apprehending, detaining, and deporting people with no legal right to be in a country is a basic function of government without which any civilized society is impossible. People who do not understand this should not be allowed to hold any political power, ever, no matter what.

It remains troubling that the government can shut down but it doesn't really "shut down." It suggests to many that somehow we have a "republic" that can continue to do most of what it does without the involvement of the people we elect to run it.
