The 14th of January 2024 will go down hin the history books as a sad day in the history of Iceland and the small fishing village of Grindavík on the Reykjanes peninsula. Our thoughts are with the people of Grindavík during these challenging times.

I am devastated by todays event. I considered not posting images that show terrible tragedy to people’s homes. I want to make it clear that if there are any news outlets out there that need free content to raise awareness, let me know, nobody should make money on this!

An eruption has started near Hagafell-Grindavík at 7:57 UTC. Then a new eruptive fissure opened at 12:10, just north of the town. Lava flows extruded from this fissure have now entered the town. en.vedur.is/about-imo/news…

New whole-rock data! The 2023 Svartsengi magma has WR MgO 8.0 wt% and K2O/TiO2 0.23, nicely fitting the glass data. This magma is very similar to magmas erupted during the 2022 and 2023 Fagradasfjall eruptions, although slighly more fractionated.

Eruption activity remained steady last night. Gas emissions did NOT impact air quality in Reykjavik overnight 👍

A friendly reminder that the plume rising from the eruption is a gas plume, not smoke. The implications for health/hazards are different.
