Meet the oldest volcanic rock ever found. This is my piece of the Erg Chech 002 meteorite. It originated in the crust of an extinct protoplanet, now long since destroyed (or incorporated within another planet) and older than the Earth itself. Its age? 4.566 billion years!

It’s remarkable that after the very strong deformation in previous weeks it appears that the eruption began in a time with relatively little activity… there are likely signals just before eruption, but hard to decipher and detect, without question much will be learned!

Me: eruption happens collect samples samples lost in post sample finally arrive send for thin sectioning thin sectioning lab down sections finally arrive probe breaks day before scheduled session acquire data days/weeks to process and interpret. Geochemistry and Petrology Group @ Uni. Iceland: give me 15 hours!
