Dictating into the microphone on an Apple computer should be simple, but it’s really struggling to understand Angus Wilson’s study of Emile Zola. It has heard ‘Balzac’ as ‘ballsack’, ‘L’Assommoir’ as ‘Lost Somwhere’ and ‘The Rouge in Macau’ instead of the ‘Rougon Macquarts.’

To accompany my sister sally muir ‘s exhibition of paintings of Spanish hunting dogs rescued by the wonderful Galgos del Sol shelter, I have made a short film about her preparatory drawings. It is on the website of cricketfineart.co.uk under ‘Films’.

Very sad about Timothy West. I met him years ago when I worked on an early South Bank Show about Harold Pinter. We filmed him playing Max in The Homecoming. Chatting afterwards, he remarked that Brecht’s Berliner Ensemble had become ‘the D’Oyly Carte of East Berlin.’ Very funny.

Who can guess the title of which novel by Emile Zola, if dictated into the microphone on an Apple desktop, is transcribed as ‘lavant the Patty’? Michael Rosen 💙💙🎓🎓 NICE 爷爷

Made in England, directed by my South Bank Show colleague and Brixton neighbour David Hinton, for which I did the stills research (coincidentally my first job in television in 1975), is going out on BBC2 tomorrow night, Sun 17 Nov, at 22.00. Please watch.

Terrific account of the reopening, after a long refurbishment, of the Brixton branch of M & S. My favourite quote: “It’s like Hamley’s for the old! Sadie Tom Holland
