The decline of Gaspésie caribou appears to have accelerated. (The semi-logarithmic graph makes that clear.) Since 2010, caribou numbers declined at more than 10% per year — in other words, abundance has been halved about every 6 years. This is a population in trouble.

Scientists & students quickly discover the paradox of #writing. The more knowledgeable you become about your research subject, the more difficult it becomes to write about it. Bridge that gap. Before you write that thesis or manuscript, make a mind map. It will save you time.

ESA, the world's largest community of ecologists. And #ESA2024 features 2920 attendees & 2681 oral & poster presentations. But more—it's an informative, inspiring gathering to share insights (in words of president Shahid Naeem) about "the most powerful science in all the world".

Conservation makes a difference. In two-thirds of cases, according to a new study, conservation either improved the state of biodiversity or at least slowed declines. We simply need more conservation. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Conserving species and fighting climate change go hand-in-hand. In ecosystems richer in plant species, more carbon is stored — based on evidence from nearly 100 studies worldwide. Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

At least since Darwin, islands have played a disproportionate role in biological thought. And islands are key to conservation. They hold a disproportionate share of the diversity and number of endangered species of plants. A new, global analysis. rdcu.be/dXVLU

Time for the scientific community to make a difference in #conservation . But it "must move beyond its comfort zone of writing papers & preaching to its own choirs. It must engage with the public and policymakers to turn knowledge into action." science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Add more capacity & traffic congestion eases. Or will it? Study after study shows new roads cut travel times—temporarily. Soon, new capacity fills with more cars, more trips & longer drives. The benefits evaporate; the environmental impacts endure. cbc.ca/news/canada/to…
