Roughly 25 Mi’kmaw protesters and allies are picketing at the entrance of the DFO on Challenger Dr. in Dartmouth. They are protesting DFO enforcement against the Moderate Livelihood fishery which they say violates Mi’kmaq treaty rights established under Marshall 1 and 2.

Zacchary Paul of Membertou says one nation cannot govern or regulate another. The colonial government has been in power for hundreds of years, and look at the result… Forest and waters have been stripped.

Halifax Harbour Bridges is taking down four more 20 m light poles near the MacKay that are at risk of falling over. You can see the rusty stress crack near the base. The HHB’s chief engineer says it’s highly unusual to be able to see a stress crack with your naked eye.

The poles were installed by the province in 2001 and were supposed to last 40 years. They only made it half way. The bridge engineer says the cracks are caused by the pole swaying in the wind. He says they were designed to take the types of high winds we’ve seen in recent storms.

Halifax Harbour Bridges hopes to have the poles down by rush-hour. But with Highway 111 and Victoria Road closed, traffic in Dartmouth is already a mess. The MacKay is still open, and you can access it from Princess Margaret Blvd in Dartmouth. But good luck with that!

Matthew Albert Percy sentenced to 5 years for sexual assault in Halifax in 2013. The former groundskeeper for St. Mary’s university has already been convicted of sexual assault and sexual assault causing bodily harm for attacks on two other women.

The Crown and defence jointly recommended his sentence. Because this was his earliest known, he’s treated as a first time offender.

Percy violently raped a long-time female friend after going over to watch a movie in her home. In a statement to the court, the victim described her ongoing fearfulness, nightmares and loss of trust as a result of the attack.

The judge told Percy to use his time in federal prison to learn the root causes of his entitlement and lack of impulse control. If he reoffends, she said he might face a period of indefinite incarceration. His latest sentence will run consecutively to those of his prior offences.

Halifax Regional Council is underway with a period of silence of the Queen. Councillor Russell points out that with Monday now a national holiday for the royal funeral, municipal business on Monday may have to be rescheduled. I'm checking if HRM is recognizing the holiday.
