A massive congratulations to the students across Scotland who have been sitting their SQA exams throughout May. I know how much time and effort goes into preparing for them and I hope the results in August reflect that.

I have previously raised concerns about the safety of this rail crossing, particularly as it is used regularly by school students. Network Rail must take urgent action to address the dangers raised by these incidents.

Yesterday, I facilitated a consultation workshop for the Scottish Biometrics Commissioner. It provided an opportunity for young people to share their views on the role of the Commissioner who sets the standards for how Police Scotland gets, keeps and gets rid of biometric data.

To tackle global warming, more people need to be encouraged to use public transport - infrequent and late trains will not do this. Now that @Scotrail is publicly owned, Scottish Government have the power to improve the quality of service and reduce ticket prices. They must seize it.

Young people are more politically engaged than ever. After years of campaigning on this issue, it is very welcome news and long over due that 16 and 17 years old will be able to vote in UK General Elections.

I’ve been surprised at the level of opposition towards lowering the voting age to 16 year olds. At 16, young people are already contributing to society. They can get a job, pay taxes and join the army. Why shouldn’t they also get a say in the decision-makers who represent them?

Students loans are not working. Almost 1.8 million people are now in at least £50,000 of student debt in the UK, with balances often rising rapidly with interest. This creates a barrier to accessing higher education, particularly for low income households. Reform is needed.

Edinburgh, Glasgow and now Aberdeen have announced that they will be introducing a ‘tourist tax’. This levy, which is a power given to local authorities last year by the Scottish Parliament, will charge visitors a fee on their nightly accommodation. Should Dundee do the same?

Today, Leia Mckenzie MSYP and I traveled through for the Scottish Parliament Festival of Politics. Leading experts discussed a range of topical issues with insight from the public. I found the session on environmental justice particularly interesting. You can visit yourself before Friday.

I know how hard MSYPs work to ensure that the young people they represent have their voices heard. However, I recognise that it often feels like this work doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. As trustee, I would promote the fantastic work MSYPs across Scotland do.

Keir Mather becomes the youngest Government Minister in almost 200 years. Young people bring fresh ideas, new energy and different experiences to these roles. That’s vital for good governance. Hopefully we won’t have to wait as long for the next young Minister to be appointed.

I am concerned about the proposed funding cuts at Dundee & Angus College. For too long there has been insufficient funding for higher education in Scotland - and now staff and students are paying the price. The Scottish Government must act.

Jack Anderson MSYP (@jackandersonsyp) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Keir Starmer recently announced his aim that 2/3’s of young people will go onto University, College or an Apprenticeship. Yet in Scotland students studying a HNC at College get less funding than those in first year at University despite it being the same level. Time for change.
