Congratulations to the new Dr Dr Huang Yen-Hua Huang who successfully defended his dissertation at UW-Madison Forest and Wildlife Ecology today! An impressive body of work on anthrax dynamics in Southern Africa and an engaging presentation. Well done, Yen-Hua!

I defended my PhD yesterday. In the journey, I've experienced many challenges. Thankfully, I've been guided by a bright lighthouse, my advisor, Dr. Wendy Turner Wendy Turner. Though I seemed awkward by that time, Wendy's 7-min intro was truly lovely. Next stop: postdoc at Yale

I was recently asked about resources for getting started with the metafor package (for conducting meta-analyses with R). So here are some suggestions.

New disinformation push on Amazon? A torrent of new low quality "books" about Taiwan has appeared; a quick Google shows at least some of the content is plagiarised, and the names of the authors appear to be fake. I count 61 of these under one search term alone. 1/4

How are neural networks used in ecology ? Apart from the analysis of images and sounds, you can use #NeuralNetworks to capture the relationship between ecological parameters (e.g. occupancy, abundance or survival) and covariates 🤯 A few pointers in the 🧵 below 😉

Interested in modeling animal movements and want to account for correlations between step-lengths and turn angles?  Check out cylcop 0.2.0 on CRAN, led by Florian Hodel!  Its faster, shinier, better documented, and has some new functions for plotting and model fitting.

Folks at EEID2023, the second last talk of the entire meeting will be about animal behavior and trophic interactions, presented by me. Please stay till the end on Thursday to hear my talk, and discuss with me if you have any interesting ideas even after the conference! #eeid2023

When I teach Principal Component Analysis (PCA), I use my interactive dashboard to engage my students. They can observe how, through an orthogonal transformation (rotation) of a two-feature dataset, the variance of the data projected onto one of the components can be maximized.
