Today, we honor U.S. Army Capt. Maria Ines Ortiz, who was killed during a mortar attack in Baghdad on July 10, 2007. Her death marked the first loss of an Army nurse in combat since the Vietnam War. Capt. Ortiz is laid to rest in Section 60. We honor her service.

Congratulations to FF Brian Downey and FF Chris Tarasenko who came on the job together 22 years ago, and are now working their final tour together. Both of them worked in Engine Company 68 in the South Bronx, and later on transferred to the Mask Service Unit on Randalls Island.
