So Manchester University took an applicants £1k, rejected their application because they can’t make living costs, and didn’t give the money back. This applicant, a friend, then dies by suicide because of his absolute hopelessness of his situation. It’s absolutely scandalous.

Incredible new research out from Myles Menz, Jason Chapman and others. They put radio trackers on the backs of these Deaths head hawkmoths and then followed them in a small Cessna plane!! The moths were recorded migrating south for 80 km in 4 hours! exeter.ac.uk/cornwall/news/…

The minimum UKRI PhD stipend is £16,062 for 2022/23. Although PhDs are training and do not legally require minimum wage, a comparison is worthwhile: National minimum wage (age 21-23) is £19,094 (40h/week). After tax that's £16,836. Living wage is £19,760 (£17,280 after tax).
