One year ago, West Lodge Tenants - No COVID Evictions! moved into their current unit at 103 West Lodge. In doing so, we were able to draw attention to the over 200 vacant units at the West Lodge towers while distributing food to our neighbours struggling during the pandemic.

One unit for our food bank might seem small compared to a plot of land or a complex of “affordable” housing. but we didn’t buy it, we didn’t ask the state to do it for us. we organized and we took it. just regular Parkdale people. and we’re still here, a year later.

The West Lodge Tenants - No COVID Evictions! tenant committee has learned about countless rental applications being rejected at their building. Even though 200 apartments sit vacant, renters with proof of ample income, sometimes well above the median household income in Parkdale, are being turned away.

Landlords are expecting Parkdale renters to have perfect credit and millionaire guarantors. No one who lives at West Lodge now would pass these tests. This is another form of displacement. Landlords don’t just use evictions to harm working class tenants.
