Meet the Black-headed Bushmaster (Lachesis melanocephala) of Costa Rica! It is elusive and secretive – you may be more likely to see a jaguar! VSG members are working with local networks to better learn where this snake currently occurs to help protect it. #PitviperBeautyPageant

The Sharp-nosed Viper (Deinagkistrodon acutus) is one of the largest vipers in Asia. There is concern of overexploitation for food/medicine, but more data is needed. One of our VSG activities will be to begin natural history studies through radiotracking. #PitviperBeautyPageant

The broad-banded temple viper (Tropidolaemus laticinctus), is endemic to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. Very little is known about them. Our members in Indonesia are designing a study to learn more about this beautiful snake to better protect it. #PitviperBeautyPageant

VSG members have published in the journal Scientific data a paper presenting a new map tool called VenomMaps concerning the distribution of New World pitvipers (Viperidae: Crotaline). This tool will help conservation management practices.
