Day 70 of lockdown and the question is how many civil servants have had wages cut, been given retrenchment notices or have had to, in any way shape or form, share the pain with the rest of us?

It's 25 years later & the government/ANC has still not internalised that SA is a constitutional democracy where the constitution & not parliament/executive is supreme & the rationality of all actions can be tested in court.

SAPS is spending much resources on finding cigarette sellers - just had a huge raid on cafes in my neighbourhood. Thousands have so far been criminalised. But when government loses next week's court case, it will all be for naught. Fight the virus, not the people!

This is brilliant, An example of how #policing of protesters should be conducted, #deescalate, & #listen. Something all people of good will including Nick Ferrari would support. Charles Fogelman keep up the good work, I hear you were the chief instigator of this.

1. Collins Khosa was killed for the temerity of enjoying a beer on his stoep. We should not let revisionist accounts which divorce his death from the authoritarian militarized prohibitionist lockdown which saw 230,000 arrests of mostly black working class South Africans

The tobacco ban triggered the biggest crime spree in SA history in terms of the number of individual transgressions: some 500m illegal transactions since lockdown started (roughly 9m smokers, say 6m packets a day X 90 days). Millions of citizens broke the law for the 1st time.

This is a fat NDZ middle finger to the public, assisted by a judge. It's a mockery. >> Govt lawyers in sudden about-turn, get court to delay cigarette case until August news24.com/fin24/companie… via @fin24

The only, but only, explanation for the cigarette ban is that it is a Nkosazana D-Z power trip >> Govt admits smokers 'less likely to be infected' with coronavirus news24.com/news24/southaf… via @news24

It beggars belief - between SAB, Heineken and Consol Glass, more than R13 billion in investment has been pulled. The economy has been sabotaged by the government because of NDZ's 'principled' prohibition. The impact will linger a lot longer than Covid-19 itself.

1. We need to talk abt our new generation of activists. Some have no understanding of history/politics, ironically regurgitate the very theories which inspired racism & colonialism,& think they act in the tradition of Fanon & Biko, but are more akin to Mobutu Sese Seko & Idi Amin.

2. They easily mobilized by nativist & fascist leaders who stoke emotional vulnerabilities & deploy them to violent actions. Every generation has this layer, but the voice of this one is amplified by Twitter & s/media. The deep inequalities of our moment feed this even further.
