There is no good reason for this apartment to be rent-stabilized, not subject to market forces. But make no mistake, this is common. Almost 30% of the city's housing stock––960,000 units!––are rent-stabilized. It's government policy that makes it hard to afford a family here.

Truly astonishing indictment of our welfare policies fr Atlanta Fed. A single mother in DC can make no gains, financially, as her earnings rise from $11,000 to $65,000 because benefits like food stamps & Medicaid phase in/out as her income rises. Terrible for work/marriage.

"Can Hannah’s spirit, which animated much of America as recently as my great-great grandmother’s generation, be more broadly recovered in our time? Pakaluk concludes that if it can be, it won’t be due to any child tax credit or parental leave scheme cooked up in Washington, DC.

“Cato’s Handbook on Executive Orders and Presidential Directives” recommends revoking or amending scores of executive orders (EOs) and other presidential directives. There’s plenty in here for either Vice President Kamala Harris & Donald J. Trump to like. cato.org/white-paper/ca…

"If a US policy were so generous that it induced Israeli levels of IVF use, the program would cost around $43 billion annually, or about what the federal government spends annually on its major housing rental assistance programs..." - vanessa brown calder aier.org/article/trumps…

Rent control is not so black and white. With different rent control designs, you can wreck your rental housing market in lots of different, unique ways.

A fascinating piece today on Discourse Magazine by vanessa brown calder of the Cato Institute on whether free IVF will actually lead to more births. It's a wonderfully interesting read. discoursemagazine.com/p/free-ivf-cou…
