Someone emailed me asking whether being enby doesn’t in fact reinforce the gender binary by acknowledging that it exists? By saying “I’m enby because I’m not stereotypically female” doesn’t that entrench female stereotype? As it’s #IamNonbinary day, let’s answer in a thread 1/?

Let's say you wanted to train a facial recognition algorithm on aging. What would do? Maybe start a meme like #10yearchallenge wired.com/story/facebook…

Dissertation Advice I got my first year. Every week or two, search for an article on your topic. Download and put into a folder. Make a spreadsheet with, citation, themes, couple sentence summary. This will build your lit review when you start writing in a few years #TrynaGrad

Qualitative interviewing makes me think humans communicate more telepathically than we realize because I have exchanges in my transcripts like: Me: Yea P: whatever Me: and that's impossible P: Yea Me: but yea On paper that's like, WTF? But we understood in the context.

The two best pieces of professional advice I've ever been given: What looks like innate capability is usually the result of 10 years of experience. There are no overnight successes. No one will respect your time unless you do.

I told my students last week, “You can never bother me in my office. My #1 and most important job I have is to teach you and to help you succeed.” I meet students in my office, coffee shop, anywhere on campus. I’m here because someone did that for me. npr.org/2019/10/05/678…

In the last years, I have tried to always publish data and code openly, as far as possible. Just received this comment from a reviewer, who did not appreciate the value of doing so: (1/n)

After reading approximately 30 applications over the past few days that explicitly requests a diversity statement. I got some notes on what to do and what not to do. The "DON'T" list is long but please bear with me. But first, lets define a diversity statement (1/x)

A problem with modern books is that they are often garish and ugly, designed to capture your attention at the competitive book store but not to fit into your private home. The solution to this is the Japanese custom one-sheet-fits-all book covers... #ブックカバー

Whenever I review an article, I feel some anxiety from (1) knowing that my decision could affect someone's career, (2) not feeling competent enough for that responsibility, and (3) realizing that the entire field of scholarship operates like this.

OK. I just watered my Mom's garden, made coffee and now I can explain to you my 3,000 to 10,000 growth in number of words. You can guess the TL;DR I DO NOT WRITE 7,000 WORDS PER DAY. I write papers based on a strategy called "Writing by Memorandum". I write memorandums.

Qualitative research tip (a thread): 1. If you really want to be a stellar qualitative researcher, one of the most important skills you'd have to cultivate and sharpen, especially if you want to work with people, is to learn to listen deeply. #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter

A call for modesty in scholarly research: When you write to highlight how you’re contributing to the literature, consider using “to the best of our knowledge” to frame your claims. Doing extensive and intensive literature reviews is an art. There’s a lot we haven’t read.
