One guy that in my opinion, is an unsung hero from yesterday’s game, is Anthony Smith. Him recovering that onside kick attempt with 5:43 left in the 3rd Quarter, was CRUCIAL! NC State wasn’t expecting it, he was by himself, and he MADE THE PLAY! GREAY JOB ANTHONY!‼️‼️💯💯

🧵I work on nat’l security affairs, so let me share what has been on my mind lately. Having returned to the US after 7 yrs overseas, I’m convinced that we need to move our public discourse away from group categories and refocus on the centrality of citizenship in a democracy. 1/7

Citizenship is about responsibility for the country. We seem to have forgotten that it is about owning the nation’s fate, and about a mutuality of obligation to people you never met simply because they are part of our nation. It’s about the public good trumping partisanship. 2/7

We’ve replaced citizens with consumers—consumers of rights or of security or peace. Recently a man told me that since he pays his taxes which then pay for our military, defending the country is not his obligation. I guess to him a soldier is akin to a hired security guard. 3/7

We know why in 1972 Nixon moved to abolish conscription, and the all-volunteer force is indeed better trained and more competent. But in the process we have forfeited the citizen-soldier idea that made decisions about going to war so gut wrenching— they affected everyone.4/7

The last 20 yrs of “scheduled wars” would have never seen US military power used with such abandon had the citizen-soldier still dominated our political culture. Political leaders would have to think twice about using the military instrument. Citizens would have to be asked. 5/7

We need a form of national service dedicated to national defense to restore the sinews that used to bind the American society. It doesn’t have to be a return of the draft as such, but a means to bring citizens back into a shared sense of responsibility for our nat’l security.6/7

At a time when the world is becoming ever more unstable—a general war is possible—the resilience of our democratic society will be just as important as our economic strength and our military capabilities. The current path of partisanship and division at home is a dead-end. 7/end
