Only 8% of criminal solicitors are under 30, and a terrifying 46% are aged 50+. If you let that statistic sink in, you will realise that almost half of the profession will retire in the next 5 to 10 years, with less than 20% of that number coming through to replace them.

This is a situation that will only get worse, as more and more young solicitors leave criminal law for the better pay and conditions available elsewhere. We urge Scottish Government to reopen talks with meaningful offers to increase legal aid funding before it is too late.
