This is my good side painted entirely in gesso. I like the matte finish of gesso, so I’ll leave this one as is, but I’m wanting to try varnishing a gesso work and then putting a cold wax varnish over the top. I tried this with one of my Frida’s, and it looks fabulous except

It’s been a summer of swallows here at Gwydir. They still come in to say ‘hello’ every morning. They particularly like the portrait of old Sir John Wynn & sit above the coat of arms- the three eagles of Owain Gwynedd. Eagles & swallows, in this instance, getting along just fine.

Winifred Knights painted the broad sweep of the limestone cliffs at Beer in Devon in 1922 in a series of atmospheric seascapes but this is the only one where she had used such luminous colour to create one of the most evocative pictures of this beautiful coastline.

'Cairngorms, late Summer.' (c1941) David Bomberg painted the Cairngorms in Scotland several times. When painting this work, he lived in a tent and was plagued by midges in relentless hordes - he wrote of seeing people flinging themselves into rivers to escape their torment.
