In 2023, the govt of Kenya adopted new digital ID regulations aiming to gradually replace the current national IDs with a new digital ID, #MaishaNamba. The policy has over time negatively impacted new ID applicants or people seeking to replace lost ones by shutting their access.

About 5 million Kenyans do not have access to ID cards because of discrimination. The rollout of digital ID #MaishaNamba could entrench discrimination against ethnic minorities & marginalized communities who've struggled with citizenship documentation for decades. #MyIDMyright

Following the introduction of Kenya’s new digital ID, #MaishaNamba, hundreds of thousands of people are now facing serious challenges in obtaining ID cards. About 20,000 people apply for/seek to renew IDs every day, but the issuance of ID cards has now stalled. #MyIDMyRight

Alleviating this ID processing and issuance crisis blocking people’s access to IDs should be a top priority for the government State Dept for Immigration & Citizen Services. People are losing out on jobs, study opportunities and vital public services because they are not able to obtain IDs. #MyIDMyRight

Ensuring a fully inclusive ID system will include implementing #MaishaNamba in phases with a clear transition period to enable all Kenyans to access nationality documents such as birth certificates & national ID cards prior to moving forward with digital ID. #MyIdMyRight

There remain concerns of the possibility of the Maisha cards being co-opted into corruption as we’re currently witnessing with the processing of passports that have a similar 10-yearexpiration period. Questions over the cost implications for renewing IDs also arise.
