In the past year, successive new regulations have transformed the way people access their IDs.From increased ID fees to the unveiling of a digital ID, Kenyans are struggling to come to terms with the rapid changes in our citizenship processes๐Ÿงต#MyIDMyRight biometricupdate.com/202402/kenyansโ€ฆ

In 2023, the govt of Kenya adopted new digital ID regulations aiming to gradually replace the current national IDs with a new digital ID, #MaishaNamba. The policy has over time negatively impacted new ID applicants or people seeking to replace lost ones by shutting their access.

About 5 million Kenyans do not have access to ID cards because of discrimination. The rollout of digital ID #MaishaNamba could entrench discrimination against ethnic minorities & marginalized communities who've struggled with citizenship documentation for decades. #MyIDMyright

Following the introduction of Kenyaโ€™s new digital ID, #MaishaNamba, hundreds of thousands of people are now facing serious challenges in obtaining ID cards. About 20,000 people apply for/seek to renew IDs every day, but the issuance of ID cards has now stalled. #MyIDMyRight

Alleviating this ID processing and issuance crisis blocking peopleโ€™s access to IDs should be a top priority for the government State Dept for Immigration & Citizen Services. People are losing out on jobs, study opportunities and vital public services because they are not able to obtain IDs. #MyIDMyRight

State Dept for Immigration & Citizen Services Stalling the rollout of #MaishaNamba digital ID even for a few months could give the government time to put in place critical laws & safeguards for a stronger identity system that is inclusive and serves the needs of Kenyans. #MyIDMyRight

"When I applied for an ID, I was asked why I was named Njeri. Our chief said that I am a Somali; that I don't deserve to be called Njeri," Hawa Njeri. Hawa Njeri lives in Nakuru. She began applying for an ID in 2002 & after several rounds of #IDVetting she is yet to get an ID.

Do you feel like the current economic situation has played a role in the rising cases of femicide in Kenya, particularly by exacerbating unemployment, financial stress, and their impact on domestic violence?#WomensLivesMatterKE

Given the historical trend of femicide in Kenya, why has a femicide-specific law or policy not been established to address the rising cases, and how can we address the existing legal gaps to ensure consistent prosecution of perpetrators?#WomensLivesMatterKE

Without an ID card, a Kenyan canโ€™t register the birth of their children; without birth certificates or an IDs, they face a life of difficulties getting into formal education, getting a job, opening a bank account, registering for a sim-card or a driverโ€™s licence. #MyIDMyRight

From marginalized communities to people in remote areas, many adults have no avenue of signing up for #MaishaNamba, excluding them from jobs and vital public services.

Even if they could afford the hefty new charges to apply for a national ID or passport, millions of Kenyans from certain ethnic or religious communities will still be forced to go through discriminatory ID vetting that further limits their access to IDs. #MyIDMyRight #DoIDRight

Ensuring a fully inclusive ID system will include implementing #MaishaNamba in phases with a clear transition period to enable all Kenyans to access nationality documents such as birth certificates & national ID cards prior to moving forward with digital ID. #MyIdMyRight

There remain concerns of the possibility of the Maisha cards being co-opted into corruption as weโ€™re currently witnessing with the processing of passports that have a similar 10-yearexpiration period. Questions over the cost implications for renewing IDs also arise.
