Southern corn rust, Puccinia polysora, confirmed for first time in Georgia today, 4 June, in Decatur Co in SW corner of state. Very little was reported on corn now in R2 growth stage. Corn growers in SW GA are advised. Thanks to Jim Griffin, Justin Odom, and Brian Hayes. UGA EXT

Phytophthora root and stem rot of soybean disease cycle. This disease reduced soybean yield by 18 million bushels in 2023. SCLB is becoming an issue in select fields across Georgia. The pictures indicate the importance of using a hybrid with resistance or high tolerance. Although fungicides are effective, host resistance is always the first line of defense. #plantpathology #corn #corndiseases

And then there was more… southern rust found in at least 3 fields in Seminole Co and now 1 field in Tift Co. (pics) thanks Dr Eddie Beasley. Southern rust could be anywhere in sw GA, but likely in small amounts for now. That will change as weather is favors spread now. UGA Ext
